The Rattler NU features the original Rattler core with an RG of 2.48 and a differential of .035, giving you a medium diff core and a unique cover. I clean my equipment after every set and don’t need to extract oil. I run them on occasion and little to nothing comes out.

I know this kinda late but.... Why are so many people against string machines? Don't get me wrong, I was too until the USBC studied them and found a minimum 54" string length made very little difference. I realize that with shorter strings, the strings pull on each other and knock pins down that shouldn't fall. I watched almost the entire webcast from the PBA50 regional in Florida. They interviewed a couple competitors during the finals (including Ryan Schafer I believe) and they both said they saw maybe one instance of a string interfering in the pinfall. Maybe!! The thing is power players don't like them because they can't throw pins around. Although from the headpin to the sideboard to the 10 pin, isn't 54 inches. I worked in a bowling center for 27 years. Everything from part time counter to assistant manager. Personally I think the problem for people is the pins are always dead on spot with strings. We would fudge the 7 & 10 out and up so the 4 & 6 could have a better chance of hitting them. Let's be honest, if pins are on spot, they don't carry as easily.....just my opinion. (based on observation).

This was a wildly helpful video. I recently inherited a Radical Closer (sym) and Hammer Redemption Pearl. I find myself grabbing the Redemption way more. Even when i dont bowl well, i find myself preferring the Redemption. So, it makes sense after seeing this video. Because of the type of bowler i am, i do see that i benefit more from an asymmetrical

In my experience it takes time and experimenting with layouts and ball types for a bowler to find what works best for them. This will also require lots of $$$ until you get it right.

As a PSO, I generally consider layout primarily in terms of bowtie management and flare safety, and within that context, performance related layout adjustments available for that style. Layout matters a lot, for all bowlers. The most frustrating thing I hear in the shop is when a skilled high average bowler says "I want to overpower the lane, so move the pin up much higher than normal" (3" from the top of the finger grips on a 5.25" span) on a symm ball to make the ball stronger and quicker. This is just flat out incorrect. I agree with Pete.

Great content here! Would really like to see throbot use a slightly lower ratio pattern (8:1 or so). Everthing looks very similar on easy house patterns; (strong covers burn up in the mids). Seems like most local weekend money tourneys use the 5:1 - 8:1 ratio patterns these days. Layouts on these ratios may matter more so!

Put enough oil on the lane, and every ball will do the same thing. JR was using the skid to show layouts don’t really matter, but neglected to tell you that the core is still doing what the layout dictates. When that ball hits friction, the position the core rotated into during the skid, matters enormously during the final hook and roll phases. If the core hits the friction laying down, the backend motion is going to different than if the core is completely upright or in a 45 degree position. Layout matters, it’s just not obvious to some people. But to be fair to JR, those people who can’t see it, are the peoplr he was talking about.

  • @michaelsnow4274

Two things I would like to see. One, is the proper ratio of the lane width and length on the ball path image. The 'hockey stick' shape is evident in the current path shape but is very different from a foul line view. Two, from Specto, is the actual board that the ball is on when it makes contact with the headpin (not the pocket). Where the rolling 15 pound ball contacts the 3 pound 6 ounce pin will determine its deflection.

Most young bowlers now just try to emulate what they see from touring pros. It's not the proper way to learn but that won't stop them. All they want to do is throw the ball as hard as possible with as much hook as possible. If they had to bowl with hard rubber, plastic, polyester, or even pancake weight block urethane, they'd be lost. Most touring pros are lost without resin or modern urethane equipment. Accuracy is a lost art, which is why most lane patterns now simply create a wall to the pocket.

The other John Furey here. Adding to the maintenance topic, if you use the balls they tend to crack less often. My theory is that the core is heavy and puts pressure on the coverstock which tends to be thinner. So I tell people to rotate the balls once in awhile if they aren’t going to be used for awhile.

its helpful in bowling to understand how exactly you and other people on your pair are changing the pattern from each shot. it’s extremely helpful in bowling to understand how exactly to change the pattern shot by shot to your advantage. don’t get mad at the guy throwing urethane on a fresh hard or short pattern. if hes in the right part of the lane it’s likely that he’s helping you by giving the pattern some shape / hold. adjust to it like you would typically when your ball skids too much: slower speed, stronger ball, make a move, etc. boom, now you have a little more room. get mad at the guy throwing urethane on a 230 scoring pattern. the lanes already have some shape/hold and the urethane is over exaggerating it.

I've personally had good luck with the dishwasher method. Now please note, no warranties, do at you own risk, ect. But if you do the eco wash and air dry, and know your water temp is under 130, it'll be fine. If your ball is absolutely saturated and your worried about oil residue in your dishwasher, set 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the top rack of the dishwasher. Not only will it break down the oil, it'll clean out deposits from your dishwasher. But no matter what, no high temp wash and air dry ONLY.

I have to disagree a bit here. The OOTB surface is made to look good on display at the pro shop. It is not an edict from God Almighty. A person at home is not going to replicate an industrial process... and given the huge range of actual OOTB surfaces for the exact same ball I have seen from some companies, they can't either :) . But seriously, neither a player nor a PSO has the same equipment that a factory has. They can get close-ish and that is all. Much better to resurface a ball to something you and/or your pro shop operator can reliably repeat, before you throw it the first time. If you want 500-1000-4000 + polish then just do that and ignore whatever the listed surface is. If all you have is some TruCut pads and ball cleaner do that, or have the PSO do that.

I bowl on wood lanes and one thing I have learned is that since the oil goes into the lanes, it will sweat out when it's really humid. So some days the lanes will be much slicker or stickier than other days, simply because of the moisture in the air and heat index. One example of this was league last week; Wednesday, my Xponent Pearl and Pitch Black ruled the night, however, on Thursday, I had to throw my spare ball all night because everything was just too aggressive in my bag! This was simply because it got super warm on Thursday and it had just finished storming out.
